How it works
Every unit is defined by an exact factor to a base unit of the same kind (for example metres for length). Converting goes through the base unit with exact decimal arithmetic. Units of different kinds, such as kilograms and metres, cannot be converted.
Conversions here use standard, internationally-defined ratios between units - some older or regional measures (e.g. a US vs UK gallon, or a local variant of a traditional unit) can differ from the standard figure used, so always confirm which specific definition a real-world document expects.
Common mistakes
- Converting between units from different measurement systems without checking they measure the same kind of quantity - length can't convert to weight, for instance; the calculator only lists compatible units within the chosen category, but picking the wrong category entirely gives a meaningless starting point.
- Rounding an intermediate conversion result before using it in a further calculation - chaining conversions with rounded intermediate values compounds small errors; where precision matters, carry full decimal places through every step.
- Assuming a unit name is unambiguous across regions (e.g. "ton" can mean a short ton, long ton, or metric tonne, each a different weight) - always confirm which specific variant is meant before trusting a converted figure for something important.
