Formula

difference = end date − start date

How it works

The total day count is found by subtracting the two dates' day numbers; it is then re-expressed as weeks, and separately as calendar years/months/days, and business days counts every weekday that is not a Saturday or Sunday between the two dates.

Worked example

The same calculation with the default values:

  • Start day 1
  • Start month 1
  • Start year 2,026
  • End day 1
  • End month 6
  • End year 2,026
  1. total days = 739,767 − 739,616 = 151
  2. weeks = 151 ÷ 7 = 21 weeks 4 days
  3. = 0 years 5 months 0 days
  4. business days (excludes weekends) = 107

Result: Total days: 151 · Weeks: 21 · Remaining days: 4

Business days exclude Saturday and Sunday only - it does not account for public holidays, which vary by country.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming "business days" already excludes public holidays - it only excludes weekends.
  • Mixing up which date is the start and which is the end.
  • Forgetting that the years/months/days figure and the total-days figure describe the same span two different ways, not two different spans.
