Tip calculator
Tip, total and each person's share of a bill.
Formula
How it works
The tip is the bill times the tip percentage. Add it to the bill for the total and divide by the number of people for each share.
Worked example
The same calculation with the default values:
- Bill 84.5
- Tip 15 %
- Number of people 2
- tip = 84.5 × 15 ÷ 100 = 12.675
- total = 84.5 + 12.675 = 97.175
- per person = 97.175 ÷ 2 = 48.5875
Result: Tip: 12.68 USD · Total with tip: 97.18 USD · Each person pays: 48.59 USD
Common mistakes
- Applying a local tipping percentage from one country to a bill in a country with very different norms - the right percentage (or whether to tip at all) depends heavily on local custom.
- Splitting the total evenly among people when the actual items/orders were very uneven - this calculator assumes an equal split; an itemized bill needs a different approach if that's not fair for the group.
- Tipping on top of a bill that already includes an automatic service charge - check the receipt first, since adding a full tip on top can mean paying for service twice.
