Fuel cost calculator
Fuel needed and trip cost from distance, consumption and fuel price.
Formula
How it works
Fuel used = distance × consumption per 100 km ÷ 100. Multiply by the price per litre for the cost of the trip.
Worked example
The same calculation with the default values:
- Distance 450 km
- Fuel consumption 7.5 L/100 km
- Fuel price per litre 1.2
- fuel = 450 × 7.5 ÷ 100 = 33.75 L
- cost = 33.75 × 1.2 = 40.5
- cost per km = 40.5 ÷ 450 = 0.09
Result: Fuel needed: 33.75 L · Trip cost: 40.50 USD · Cost per kilometre: 0.09 USD
Common mistakes
- Using a consumption figure in miles per gallon directly in a field that expects liters per 100 km - these are different units measuring efficiency in opposite directions (higher L/100km is worse, higher mpg is better), and must be converted, not entered as-is.
- Forgetting that consumption on the highway, in the city, and towing a load can differ substantially - a single average figure applied to every trip type will over- or under-estimate specific journeys.
- Using an outdated fuel price - prices change frequently, so an old price entered here will skew the cost estimate away from what will actually be paid at the pump.
